Homeserver - FAQ's

What is Windows Home Server?

Windows Home Server is a new version of Windows from Microsoft that runs on specially designed "home server" devices. Windows Home Server provides a central file share for all PCs, automatic daily backup, and web-based file access in one easy to use device.

Isn't Windows Home Server a backup system itself? Why do I need Jungle Disk for WHS?

Windows Home Server has two primary features: First, it backs up all the files on your household PCs, allowing you to quickly recover local files if a machine crashes. Second, Home Server provides centralized "Shared Folders" to keep your documents, pictures, movies, and other important files. These files are typically not backups, but your primary copies of important files. While Home Server provides some protection for these files, it can't protect you against loss from fire, flood, theft, corruption, or hardware failures. Jungle Disk protects your shared folders and allows you to keep your most important, irreplaceable files backed up online for the ultimate in off-site protection.

What is Amazon S3 ™ and how does it work with Jungle Disk for WHS?

Amazon S3 ™ is a revolutionary online storage service from Amazon.com. When used in conjunction with Jungle Disk it allows you to back up your data to multiple Amazon.com datacenters around the country. Unlike other services, with Amazon S3 there is no minimum and no maximum amount of data you can store. You pay only for the actual amount of storage you are using.

How much does Jungle Disk for Windows Home Server cost?

The Jungle Disk for Windows Home Server software is free to use during the beta period, however you will still need to provide an Amazon S3 account. Pricing for the release version has not been announced, however it will be a one time purchase with free upgrades - just like our desktop software. We will also be offering a discount for users who have already purchased the desktop version of Jungle Disk.

What is the difference between the Desktop version and the Windows Home Server version?

The desktop version of Jungle Disk runs on your Windows, Mac, or Linux PC and provides desktop access to your online files via a mapped drive, as well as automatic backup.

Jungle Disk for Windows Home Server runs completely on your Windows Home Server machine, no PC software is required, and automatically protects your shared files. Configuration for backup and restore is provided through the Windows Home Server Console.

Although separate products, the two work well together. You can use a single Amazon S3 account for both versions, and the desktop version of Jungle Disk can access files that have been backed up from your Windows Home Server.

How is my data protected with Jungle Disk for Windows Home Server?

The same protection mechanisms available in the desktop version of Jungle Disk are in the Home Server edition as well

  - Your data is fully encrypted prior to leaving your Home Server machine using AES-256
  - Checksums of your data are verified during the upload process to eliminate the chance of corruption
  - Amazon stores your data on multiple servers across the country to protect against data loss
  - Multiple file versions are stored, allowing you to restore older copies in case of local corruption
