Our guest this week was Omar Quimbaya, technology evangelist at Def Logix.
This past Saturday, November 19, the ninth episode of Cyber Talk Radio hit the airwaves on 1200 WOAI and iHeartRadio streaming.
Omar Quimbaya, technology evangelist Def Logix joined the show to discuss how security is a team sport and firmware security.
In the first half of the show, Omar gives the listeners background on Def Logix and a cybersecurity meet-up that he leads called, CyberDEF DOJO. In case you aren’t familiar, CyberDEF DOJO is a place for local hackers, innovators and learners to hone their skills in the art of cybersecurity. The organization also works to develop cyber secure communities by learning, hacking and pitching. We then transition the conversation into “why security is a team sport.” Omar cautions that you cannot rely on one single person to solve all of your security problems. All teams at your company need to be aware of their behaviors online, processes if a breach were to occur, proper data access, etc. Omar highlights that the three main areas that comprise cybersecurity are people, processes and technology.
In the second half of the show, Bret and Omar walk listeners through firmware security and what happens inside your computer. Omar answers questions such as “What is firmware?” and “What are the security implications of firmware?” Hackers are now putting malware in firmware which is extremely hard to remove. It is basically a “chronic disease” in your hardware. We also walk through ways to find out if your firmware has been affected by malware. Omar gives tips on how to monitor your network and regulate what devices can access the network. Want to hear our security predictions for 2017? Make sure to listen through to the end of the show!
