Our guest this week was Robert Autenrieth, president at J. Nels Consulting.
This past Saturday, November 26, the tenth episode of Cyber Talk Radio hit the airwaves on 1200 WOAI and iHeartRadio streaming.
Robert Autenrieth, president J. Nels Consulting joined the show to discuss incident management and response should you experience a data breach.
In the first half of the show, Robert walks the listeners through how to properly handle an cyber incident such as a data breach. He goes through the major components of incident management including customer communications, compliance guidelines and external company brand control. Cyberattacks are now the main source of data breaches. Robert gives listeners an overview of what a cyber attack is, how businesses can identify any data breaches and different types of incident scenarios. For anyone that doesn’t have an incident response team on staff, Robert gives suggestions on immediate steps to take.
In the second half of the show, Bret and Robert discuss day zero - what happens when you get attacked and walk through a hypothetical scenario. Bret acts as the IT manager for a medical group and calls Robert for advice as he noticed that his computer might have been hacked and there is a potential data breach. Robert walks Bret through proper steps to follow when you discover a data breach such as unplugging the infected server, determining potential cause of the breach, triage, disclosure requirements and how to best get back to business as usual. Once the incident response and management is completed, Robert recommends that all businesses do a post mortem meeting to discuss how the incident was handled and talk through processes and procedures to follow to avoid a data breach in the future.
