March 31st is World Backup Day! Here at Jungle Disk, we get pretty excited for this day and the initiative started by the good folks at World Backup Day. For those who are unfamiliar, the goal of World Backup Day is to remind everyone of the critical importance of having a secure second copy of all your critical data.
What would you do if you lost everything?
This is the core question that, in honor of World Backup Day, we want to ask you, dear reader. What would you do if your most critical business data were to all disappear? Do you have a plan for business continuity? Surely, these questions seem a bit alarmist, but these are very real situations that many businesses, unfortunately, face every day. It doesn’t matter whether data is lost by accident, theft, natural disaster, ransomware or some other event, it’s a frightening situation for any business.
Take 15 minutes today to make or review your business’ data security plan.
In the spirit of World Backup Day, I encourage you to take 15 minutes, today, and make or review your plan for securing your business’ most critical data. To help you get started, here are some quick ideas on what you can do today:
Device Inventory - Take inventory of your company’s computers, external hard drives, servers and mobile devices. Be sure to note device serial numbers as this could be useful in a theft situation.
Restore Files - Check the files and folders that are selected for backup, review any reports or logs for those backups and run a restore from those backups to ensure they can be restored. A backup is only as good as it’s ability to be restored!
Encrypted Backup - If you aren’t already backing up your computers, start a trial of Jungle Disk Encrypted Backup. If you have an existing backup strategy, consider the use of encryption for your backups. Jungle Disk offers client-side encryption and customer-owned keys, so all your data is encrypted before it leaves your computers, and only you will know the password to decrypt the files. Check out this post to learn more about Jungle Disk encryption features.
Network Security Test - Test your office’s network security using our Shield Test.
Email Archiving - Consider how you backup your email data. Are you backing up Outlook .pst files? If so, you should consider switching to an Email Archiving and eDiscovery solution. It’s more reliable, secure, and less expensive than backing up .pst files. Are you using Microsoft Office 365 or G suite for your company’s email and document collaboration?
