This past Saturday, April 15, episode 29 of Cyber Talk Radio hit the air on 1200 WOAI and iHeartRadio streaming. I was joined by Mark Collier, CTO at SecureLogix, to discuss voice and unified communications security.
In the first half of the show, we kick off by having Mark give us a quick overview of his IT background at Southwest Research and 15 years at SecureLogix. SecureLogix focuses on voice security to protect from businesses from spoofing, robocalls and other threats. Be careful when answering a phone call from an unknown number. Some scam calls just try to get you to say certain words so that they can record your response. For example, recording you saying “yes” to scam you saying yes on an authorization. Another voice security scam example is the 911 calls in Phoenix that saturated contact centers and people are not able to get through for real emergencies. This is called a Telephony Denial of Service (TDOS) attack. To prevent attacks like this from happening, SecureLogix offers a voice/call firewall intrusion system. One of the major problems with security is that the weakest link is still people. Some SecureLogix customers get a billion phone calls a year. That is opening up your business to a lot of security risk!
In the second half of the show, we walk through what a phone system looks like and how to solve for spoofing problems. Mark gives the audience an example scenario where there are boiler rooms of scammers making billions of robocalls, which can potentially take down your business’ phone system. It’s hard to determine where the calls are coming from. There is a do not originate concept in the industry (DNO). Phone service providers are doing very surgical blocking of calls from certain phone numbers. Did you know that 1 in 2,500 calls are typically fraudulent?
