This past Saturday, June 10, episode 37 of Cyber Talk Radio hit the air on 1200 WOAI and iHeartRadio streaming. I was joined by Sherri Hanson, executive director at the 24th Air Force/Air Force Cyber Command/Joint Force Headquarters-Cyber, to discuss how the 24th Air Force cyber operations got started, their mission and the major partnerships that they have with both academia and private sector businesses..
In the first half of the show, we kick off by having Sherri give us a quick overview of her career background starting as a civilian in the U.S. Air Force in 1989. In July, she will be leaving her post as the executive director at the 24th Air Force/Air Force Cyber Command/Joint Force Headquarters-Cyber and heading to Alabama to attend the War College. After completing a year at the War College, she will then do a tour of work at the Pentagon. After we get some background on Sherri’s experience, we then move into discussing how and why the 24th Air Force was started. Rest assured the U.S. Air Force is doing everything they can to protect our country! Have you ever heard of signals intelligence? Learn about signals intelligence and three strategic initiatives of the 24th Air Force that help them rethink the “nature of war.”
In the second half of the show, Sherri and I discuss the merging of the 24th and 25th Air Force. The chief of staff of the Air Force made the decision to make the two divisions truly a multi-domain cyber operations. Cyber is now impacting everything even non-cyber command aspects. In case you weren’t aware, here’s the difference between the two divisions. The 24th Air Force is the Air Force component of U.S. Cyber Command. The 25th Air Force provides multi-source intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR) products, applications, capabilities and resources, to include cyber and geospatial forces and expertise. We then discuss the Cyber Proving Ground which stood up about two and half years ago. The Cyber Proving Ground (CPG) is a collaborative effort between 24th Air Force, 25th Air Force and the Air Force Life Cycle Management Center. It enables and supports high performance teams assembled from the breadth of the Air Force cyber community of interest and external partners to rapidly assess the applicability of emerging concepts and technologies to address emergent cyberspace operational challenges. To submit a product to the CPG program, visit their website here.
As Sherri says, “San Antonio is Military and Cyber City USA!” Let’s continue to put San Antonio on the map as a leading tech ecosystem and continue to integrate with military operations. We have five or six National Security Agency (NSA) centers of excellence in our four-year universities around town. That is a great accomplishment!
