Cybersecurity Awareness and Training - Week 45 of Cyber Talk Radio

Show Summary

This past Saturday, August 5, episode 45 of Cyber Talk Radio hit the air on 1200 WOAI and iHeartRadio streaming. I was joined by Felix Odigie, CEO at Inspired eLearning, to discuss cybersecurity awareness and training.

In the first half of the show, we kick off by having Felix give some background on how and why Inspired eLearning was started in 2003. Inspired eLearning was created to provide businesses and their employees cybersecurity awareness development and training. Do your employees know what phishing attacks and ransomware are? There are an estimated 4,000 attacks a day from 2016 to date. Taking the right approach to training can be tricky as you don’t want to make your employees feel stupid. The delivery is important to the consumption of the content and it’s not just about learning. You need to take the learning and put physical controls in place to help keep your data safe as well. Security needs to always be in the back of your mind. Public WiFi is a perfect example of a cyber place that people think they’re safe. But we know they’re not! If you think things are complicated now, wait until the Internet of Things continues to take hold.

In the second half of the show, we walk through a mock cybersecurity training. Try a drop test with a USB drive in the parking garage to see if anyone falls for the test. Also, try a day in the life training to catch some of the pitfalls during someone’s normal work day. One of the major malware attacks through social media this year was through a mock ESPN link. Why are people less worried about computer authentication? It’s important to not be lazy with your password management and two-factor authentication is always helpful. Apps like Google Authenticator help make two-factor easy for people to implement. Inspired eLearning’s training courses look at people’s weaknesses in their security posture to help improve their security moving forward. They can help an employer determine weaknesses in their business in different areas and establish a security awareness program to track your business’ progress. Quick steps to follow - First step, know where weaknesses are and where people need training. Second step, customize training in those specific areas. Third step, implement training for employees. Felix also gives a few security tips to follow are maintain complex passwords, change password often, limit information shared on social media and don’t always focus on the cost of implementing cybersecurity precautions as you need to think about how much an actual attack would cost your business.
