This past Saturday, January 27, episode 70 of Cyber Talk Radio hit the air on 1200 WOAI and iHeartRadio streaming. I was joined by Jenna Saucedo-Herrera, San Antonio Economic Development Foundation.
We kick off the first part of the episode with Jenna telling us about the mission of the San Antonio Economic Development Foundation (SAEDF). How does economic development happen in San Antonio? SAEDF focuses on recruiting new businesses to San Antonio and growing businesses based here. San Antonio has a very diverse group of businesses with a strong core military industry and an attractive environment for advanced manufacturing, cybersecurity, bioscience and energy. The City of San Antonio and Bexar County offer incentives to attract businesses to bring offices to San Antonio and employ local workers. However, many times you do not hear about these company moves as many projects are kept confidential. Two great public examples are Ernst & Young with 600 hires and Hulu with 500 hires. The SAEDF also does a lot of work with talent development. Listen to our previous episode with SA Works to hear more on workforce development.
In the second half of the show, we talk through why San Antonio is an attractive location for cyber companies. If you are a Fortune 500, why San Antonio? Jenna and I walk through a hypothetical scenario of a company looking to come to San Antonio or a company needing to ramp of hiring for cybersecurity talent. What are the scarce skill sets in our top industries and how can we help fill those gaps with programs like SA Works? Workforce development is a primary driver for CEO’s looking for business locations. University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) has the #1 cybersecurity program in the country. Programs like CyberPatriot are also great for exposing students to technology and cybersecurity. A number of local universities beyond UTSA are offering advanced cybersecurity degrees as well such as St. Mary’s, St. Philip’s, Our Lady of the Lake and Texas A&M San Antonio. Freedom Security Alliance and Noblis recently expanded to San Antonio over the last year. We close out the segment with asking Jenna what some of the top misconceptions are about San Antonio.
