This past Saturday, June 23, episode 91 of Cyber Talk Radio hit the air on 1200 WOAI and iHeartRadio streaming. I was joined by Jeannine Wild, chief recruitment officer at TechBloc.
We start off the first segment with Jeannine giving the audience background on what TechBloc is: A tech advocacy organization that uses education to develop the San Antonio tech industry. In the past, San Antonio had been a net exporter of college graduates, but TechBloc is working to change that and make this the city of choice for jobs and industry recognition. What are the challenges that TechBloc faces? Many tech startups don’t have the resources to recruit good early hires and the right person for the jobs that need filled, which is the most important part of building a business. To fix this, TechBloc is playing the matchmaker between the open opportunities and the people who can fill those roles. Since Jeannine is new to this role, I asked her what she thinks success looks like for her first year in this position. Really, to Jeannine, getting the word out is really the most important factor in all of this; making sure people are aware of the resources available to them in tech education and employment is crucial. As I’ve observed the San Antonio downtown tech district growing, tech education firms such as Codeup and Open Cloud Academy are great partners for Jeannine to work with to have access to talent. As money goes exponentially further in Texas, the low cost of living and high quality of life make San Antonio a great city of choice for talent, especially compared to San Francisco or New York City.
In the second half of the show, I ask Jeannine to share some tips for people in the tech industry who are looking for a job. She recommends that everyone get their LinkedIn profiles in order, making sure that it’s professional and filled out for their respective industries. In a similar vein, also refresh your resume in the case of an unexpected opportunity. Working on networking skills is important to getting connections within the industry (TechBloc’s Tech2sday occurs every second Tuesday of the month). Another resource that TechBloc offers is their newsletter, which keeps subscribers up-to-date on events and job openings. Jeannine makes another suggestion for those who are looking for employment: Take any job at a company you aspire to work for, which most likely will be an entry-level position, and then use that position as a foot in the door to leverage and expand your role at that company. This is an important strategy because internal hiring and recruiting is becoming more and more viable for companies who need to fill higher-level positions. We reiterate that TechBloc’s main goal is making sure talent remains in this city and companies can grow to their fullest potential, working together rather than competing with each other.
