This past Saturday, November 3, episode 110 of Cyber Talk Radio hit the air on 1200 WOAI and iHeartRadio streaming. I was joined by Brent Fessler, Hallmark University President, to discuss the university’s cybersecurity program and the growing demand for cybersecurity talent in San Antonio.
According to the Bureau of Labor and Statistics, “with job growth projected at 12 percent for information systems managers and 28 percent for information security analysts, the career outlook for someone who has earned their B.S. in information systems with a concentration in cybersecurity is very bright.” This is a very promising statistic for universities like Hallmark University in San Antonio offering cybersecurity degree programs. If you are a high school student on a CyberPatriot team or just interested in cybersecurity, you need to look at the Hallmark University program! Hallmark University is celebrating its 50th year starting in aerospace and has now evolved into business, healthcare, technology and cybersecurity to follow suit with the growing industries in San Antonio. Several of the degree concentrations overlap and compliment each other, such as the healthcare industry is one that needs a strong cybersecurity focus. It is extremely important to keep electronic and physical medical records and data secure.
Many of the university’s professors for the cybersecurity program are practicing professionals during the day and teach in the evenings. This enables the professors to teach the students skills that are practiced daily in businesses and can help better prepare them for securing a job after graduation. How does Hallmark deal with the constant change of what needs to be included in the program? Businesses are collaborating with the university on the hard and soft skills, experience level, and tool knowledge requirements that are needed from job candidates so that they can incorporate in their curriculum and programs. Many businesses are first focused on finding the right culture fit and character before hard skills. Where is the university going in the next 50 years? Data science and business analytics are growing specialties that the Hallmark team is considering adding to its program. Hallmark University prides itself on “providing professionally-focused degrees that develop the whole person in about half the time.” How do students get a degrees program done in 2 and a half years? Brent shares that one of the not so hidden secrets is not taking summers off. Also, the degrees are available both on campus and online. How do you guide students around the best approach for them? The online degree program is asynchronous, but there are weekly assignments and coursework. The university really tries to work with the individual and what schedule works best for them. Also, if you are a veteran, the GI Bill is eligible! Over a fourth of the students in their cybersecurity program are veterans using the GI Bill. The university also has a financial aid and services department that will help students through the financial aid application process.
Are graduates finding jobs after getting their degree at Hallmark University? Cybersecurity is a high growth and constantly changing industry. There are a lot of jobs available out there that are for more experienced professionals and not entry level. It’s important to have the right tools and skill set. There are approximately three million jobs available in the cybersecurity industry, need to get more middle and high students interested in cybersecurity. For every CyberPatriot player out there, Hallmark has a $6,000 scholarship available. They are focused on making education more attainable!
