Machine Learning Security - Cyber Talk Radio Episode 1
Machine Learning Security - Week 1 of Cyber Talk Radio
This past Saturday, September 24th, the first episode of Cyber Talk Radio hit the airwaves on 1200 WOAI and iHeartRadio streaming. Show archives are available on the Cyber Talk Radio website or directly on the Cyber Talk Radio YouTube Channel
To open the discussion we covered a machine learning background including mentions of TensorFlow, Watson, Tay, and many other examples of consumer facing AI as well as developer tools to build your own systems. After establishing a baseline we started to discuss the impact machine learning (aka. artificial intelligence) will have on security.
The birth of a new security product category – The AI Firewall?
When the internet began you’d directly connect to it just like a big “home network” from a trust perspective. As more people connected and port scanners such as nmap became available the need for a firewall appeared. As basic services were now guarded by firewalls attackers move to the open services and went deeper. This created the web application vulnerability scanners and led to web application firewalls (WAFs). Now attackers are turning more and more often to social engineering led attacks which are very manual or unsophisticated today.
With machine learning we will see “social vulnerability scanners” appear en masse and with a high level of sophistication. Many IT organizations run “social scans” against their employees today to help with security awareness and defend their business from phishing. Through the use of artificial intelligence hackers will be able to make more context and time relevant attacks in an automated manner. Charlie and I talk about this and the implications of it in more detail on the program. The end result is I believe we’ll see AI Firewalls coming soon.
