New Jungle Disk macOS and Linux Software Clients

Today, we’re announcing the release of Jungle Disk 3.20 for macOS and Linux operating systems.

With today’s release we have provided recent updates to our software clients across all supported platforms improving performance, reliability, and security for our customers. Jungle Disk’s mission is to protect critical data for the entire business, no matter the operating systems, including both employees’ computers and servers. While similar in scope to the release of Jungle Disk 3.19 for Windows, this release’s headline focuses on major boosts to compatibility and core application performance on Mac and Linux systems. This is a big milestone because we know protecting your business data, regardless of the platform, is critical to your success and your reputation with your customers.

Topics covered regarding today’s release:

  1. What’s new in Jungle Disk 3.20
  2. Downloading and installing/updating your Jungle Disk software
  3. What next for the Jungle Disk client software?

What’s new in Jungle Disk 3.20?

As a Mac user myself, my favorite improvement in this release is the drastically improved performance and speed of the user interface. Secondly, we’ve made some very solid improvements in the application’s management of memory/RAM. All of this amounts to a much more stable, reliable, and performant version of Jungle Disk, and we’re very proud to share it with you. Most of the big changes for this version are under the hood, but that’s not to downplay the impact that this will have for our customers. All core application dependencies have been updated, including cURL and OpenSSL, and many more.

Our Linux clients, with the exception of our Server Edition backup agent (which has no user interface), has been extremely difficult to run on the latest versions of the most popular distributions. With this release we can happily announce that the entire suite of Jungle Disk client applications will run on the latest releases of most major distributions and desktop environments. We officially support the following distros and desktop environments:

  • Fedora - 23, 24, 25
  • CentOS - 6 & 7
  • RHEL - 6 & 7
  • Ubuntu - 12.04, 14.04, 16.04
  • Mint
  • Debian - Jessie
  • OpenSUSE -
  • Desktop Environments - GNOME, KDE, Cinnamon, Unity*

(Unity users will need to install a separate package to emulate a “system tray” in order to get full functionality)

On the Mac side of things, we’ve made big strides in the performance and speed of the Activity Monitor user interface, but we’ve also made some user experience changes that many customers will find very welcome. Namely, any Jungle Disk Network Drives that you have mounted to your desktop will now stay mounted even when the Jungle Disk Activity Monitor application isn’t running! To do this, we actually separated out the code that manages drive mapping into it’s own separate background program. We believe this will make Jungle Disk more efficient and user friendly for our Mac users. Where compatibility is concerned, we’re now officially supporting:

  • 10.9 (Mavericks)
  • 10.10 (Yosemite)
  • 10.11 (El Capitan)
  • 10.12 (Sierra)
