Attracting Cyber Businesses to Bexar County with Commissioner Calvert - Week 26 of Cyber Talk Radio

Attracting Cyber Businesses to Bexar County with Commissioner Calvert - Week 26 of Cyber Talk Radio

Our guest this week is Bexar County Commissioner Tommy Calvert.

Show Summary

This past Saturday, March 25, episode 26 of Cyber Talk Radio hit the air on 1200 WOAI and iHeartRadio streaming. I was joined by Tommy Calvert, Bexar County Commissioner for Precinct 4, to discuss his role as a county commissioner and plans for attracting technology and cybersecurity focused companies to Bexar County.

In the first half of the show, we kick off by having Commissioner Calvert tell us about his background, how he became a County Commissioner and what his role entails for Bexar County Precinct 4. A few of his many responsibilities as commissioner of over 500,000 people include managing the budgets of the justice and health system and building infrastructure. Commissioner Calvert is passionate about encouraging young students to get involved in technology and has actually created a housing bond focused on millennials to help with the cost of living. I asked Commissioner Calvert, “if I was thinking about starting a tech business, why choose San Antonio?” Hint, there is a $1 million innovation fund in San Antonio to help with hiring, intern programs, training and more. Would that entice you to start a business in San Antonio?

In the second half of the show, we dive into everything cyber and technology focused. Random fact, did you know that Commissioner Calvert has a radio show where he introduced the world’s first artificial intelligence DJ? He is currently working with the Greater Chamber of Commerce to implement cyber curriculums in schools including cybersecurity certification courses (CompTIA and Network+). His vision is that every high school has multiple teachers that can teach cyber curriculum. In San Antonio, there is a real need to expose families to technology careers and opportunities. Commissioner Calvert wants to help organizations like Codeup scale to keep San Antonio competitive as a cyber city. Commissioner Calvert highlights that one thing we need to work on as a city is securing a $1 million program to offer cyber education and training to Bexar County. Let’s all work together and help make that happen!
