Industry News by Bret Piatt Aug 22, 2017 David's Law - The Fight Against Cyberbullying - Week 47 of Cyber Talk Radio David’s Law - The Fight Against Cyberbullying - Week 47 of Cyber Talk Radio Show Summary This past Saturday, August 19, episode 47 of Cyber Talk Radio hit the air on 1200 WOAI and iHeartRadio streaming. I was joined by Maurine and Matt Molak, founders of David’s Legacy Foundation. In the first half of the show, we start the show by introducing Maurine and Matt Molak and David’s Legacy Foundation. Matt shares their family story around why the Foundation was created to honor their son, David. David’s Legacy Foundation is a non-profit organization dedicated to ending cyber-assisted bullying by educating communities about the harmful effects of cyber abuse, providing support for bullying victims, promoting kindness, and supporting legislation that prohibits the cyberbullying of minors. As many people are aware from first-hand experience, cyberbullying is a growing problem with students. After lots of hard work and effort, David’s Law was passed and signed by Governor Abbott in May and goes into effect September 1st. David’s Law requires school districts to include cyberbullying in their district bullying policies and notify a child’s parents if he or she is a victim or alleged aggressor of bullying. The law allows schools to combat and prevent cyberbullying by investigating off campus cyber-assisted bullying if it materially affects the school environment. Social media has completely changed cyberbullying and really allows conversations, pictures and videos to live on forever. The Foundation has also recently launched the David’s Law Pledge campaign with the Red Ellipsis stickers. Listen to the replay to hear how you can get your own sticker and take the pledge to never use your device as a weapon. Go to http://www.davidslegacy.org/davidslaw-anti-cyberbullying-pledge/ to donate and order stickers to share with your community. In the second half of the show, we go into more of the detailed aspects of David’s Law. I personally took the David’s Law pledge to stop cyberbullying and ask that if you are reading this to also do the same. The Molak Family’s mission is to honor their son, David, by putting an end to cyberbullying. The meaning of the Red Ellipsis campaign and pledge is to use the ellipsis symbol as a reminder to think before you send as you commonly have that symbol pop up on your cell phone as you are typing a text message. Another aspect of the David’s Legacy Foundation is the Don’t Bully Me (DBM) Project. The DBM Project was developed by San Antonio law firms working to bridge the gap that exists between those who are victims of bullying, parents, schools, teachers and the rest of the community with the goal of putting an end to bullying. The DBM Project aims to focus on providing legal services to resolve situations where serious incidents of repeated physical, social and/or verbal bullying is occurring. So far, the DBM Project has helped 25 families around San Antonio and they are looking forward to expanding their work to help more families locally and replicate in other cities. Going into the 2017 school year, David’s Legacy Foundation wants to make sure everyone understands the changes with David’s Law. In the past, there hasn’t been any consequences for this behavior. Have your children be champions of the Ellipsis campaign at their schools! To help spread the word for the upcoming school year, iHeart Media has launched a support website featuring celebrities such as Michael Ray that have taken the David’s Law pledge. Check out the website here. It’s important to teach kids how to use their devices appropriately and safely. Turn bystanders into upstanders!
