Bret Piatt, CTR Host, and Earl Eiland, 4S Cyber Solutions, discuss the evolution of cybersecurity and today’s challenges. - Week 67 of Cyber Talk Radio

Show Summary

This past Saturday, January 6, episode 67 of Cyber Talk Radio hit the air on 1200 WOAI and iHeartRadio streaming. I was joined by Earl Eiland, 4S Cyber Solutions Chief Strategy and Innovation Officer.

We kick off the first part of the episode with Earl’s background in cybersecurity and role at 4S Cyber Solutions. Coming into the new year, do small businesses need to be concerned about cybersecurity? Hint… Absolutely! As a small business, it’s critical to have precautions and security measures in place. Businesses that are vendors of the government are even required to follow a risk management framework. From a proactive perspective, if you get certified in the risk management framework you get a leg up on bidding for government contracts. Mainstream businesses are now recognizing that there are bad actors out there and you need to implement even just the basic security measures to help keep your business protected. Beyond the business need for cybersecurity planning, there is huge job opportunity potential for students to learn cybersecurity skills through programs like CyberPatriot.

In the second half of the show, we talk through security tips and precautions to take to avoid social engineering heading into 2018. One example I like to use is a drop test with a USB drive. Do not pick up an unknown USB and plug it into your personal or business computer. Going back to what we discussed in the first half of the show, a risk management framework goes beyond cybersecurity. It brings in the understanding that it’s not just the bad guys that you have to watch out for. You have to be prepared for unexpected situations such as the Atlanta airport power outage. It’s important to have business continuity planning in place. A human error or accident are both situations you have to be prepared for outside of a cybersecurity issue. Businesses should have precautions in place like redundancy and recovery with backups. Bringing in an external company to audit your business continuity planning is a good way to assess your cyber risk.
