Bret Piatt, CTR Host, and Luis Martinez, Ph.D., Trinity University’s Director of the Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship - Week 77 of Cyber Talk Radio

Show Summary

This past Saturday, March 17, episode 77 of Cyber Talk Radio hit the air on 1200 WOAI and iHeartRadio streaming. I was joined by Luis Martinez to discuss the Students + Startups program.

We kick off the show by getting to know Luis, his background in education and role as director of the Center for Innovation at Trinity University. As a part of his role at Trinity, Luis helps run the Students + Startups program. What is Students + Startups? Founded in 2016, Students + Startups is a collaboration between Trinity University, the 80/20 Foundation and Geekdom, to match students up with local startups to gain internship experience in different job roles and industries. In the first year, the program connected 15 students with 13 companies. In 2017, they connected 38 students with 29 companies. This year, the goal is to match 60 students with local startups! Jungle Disk is a proud participant of the program and looks forward to welcoming five interns this summer! The students are from all different countries and have different skill sets. Students + Startups helps give the students community exposure, experience working with and getting to know the local startup ecosystem, a chance to see different professional roles and an added bonus of $4,000 stipend and 1 hour class credit.

In the second half of the show, I asked Luis to share his advice on how to start a business and the necessary components of running a business. We both agree that your team is a critical component of running a business. Other important aspects are culture, company mission and values. What advice would Luis give a business bringing in a college intern for the first time? Luis gives some great tips on how to make an internship impactful for both the business and student. It’s important to work with local universities to find students that are the right fit for your internship, whether its in computer science, marketing, finance, etc. In fact, any students interested in being an associate producer of Cyber Talk Radio? Email us! Detailed job descriptions are also key and helpful in giving the intern a better understanding of what their internship project would be and how it will provide them a valuable educational experience. Students want meaningful work! For students or business professionals thinking about starting your own business, Luis recommends a few books, Running Lean and The Lean Startup by Eric Ries
