Cyber Talk Radio: Identifying and Protecting Relevant Data

Bret Piatt, CTR Host and Lisa McComb and Melissa Unsell-Smith, Rectify co-founders - Week 87 of Cyber Talk Radio

Show Summary

This past Saturday, May 26, episode 87 of Cyber Talk Radio hit the air on 1200 WOAI and iHeartRadio streaming. I was joined by Lisa McComb and Melissa Unsell-Smith, Rectify co-founders, to discuss their developments in creating software that helps companies protect business and consumer data.

I start off the segment with an emphasis on how data privacy has recently been a hot topic in the media and a concern for consumers. Lisa and Melissa give us an introduction to Rectify and how they play in the data privacy space. Rectify solves challenging data privacy problems that occur when companies share or sell data to third parties. It’s document cleansing technology leverages privacy-enabled artificial intelligence (AI) to protect consumer identities and other private information during data sharing activities. There is often a need to protect consumers’ identities in all data sets and only disclose the info that you need to disclose to accomplish the task you are working towards. Rectify attempts to keep companies from being hit with fines for holding onto or disclosing unnecessary private information. With Rectify’s software, leveraging artificial intelligence would enable the identification of consumer identities and remove them efficiently and accurately before an issue appears — it then gives companies more time and resources to do more meaningful work. How’d they decide to take the initiative to move ahead with their idea? They both worked in corporate legal roles where they saw the need for improvement in data privacy, but not the budget or the supplies to do so successfully. They took the risk to branch out on their own, and different companies from various industries kept showing interest. The co-founders are now working on patents that automate the protection of PII (personally identifiable information) using artificial intelligence.

In the second half of the show, we talked about some more of the details of data privacy and how the Rectify software functions. I quickly mention a recent episode of CTR, where I delivered a related monologue on data privacy. We then chatted about when businesses are asked to turn over data or share info with a document management system — a ‘file cabinet’ where all employees are required to store their documents and that automatically archives unnecessary files. With Rectify, when a company needs to export a file to this document management system, the user has the ability to remove specific sensitive information. AI automatically detects the contents of your documents, which becomes very important to do accurately for large sets of data. When using AI to redact information, rather doing it manually, time is reduced by 93 percent. Lisa and Melissa emphasized that by being proactive and providing quality control and an audit trail, Rectify decreases the need for companies to be reactive in the case of an emergency. Privacy is now becoming a way to gain competitive edge as consumers are now much more aware of how their data is being handled — if privacy is prioritized, they gain trust. The creation of Rectify is just one example of finding inefficiencies and opportunities for improvement in a current situation and learn from those experiences.
