Cyber Talk Radio: San Antonio Startup Week 2018
Bret Piatt, CTR Host and Cat Dizon of Alamo Angels and Active Capital - Week 109 of Cyber Talk Radio
This past Saturday, October 27, episode 109 of Cyber Talk Radio hit the air on 1200 WOAI and iHeartRadio streaming. I was joined by Cat Dizon, Alamo Angels Executive Director and Active Capital Partner, to discuss venture and angel funding in San Antonio as well as female entrepreneurship.
It was a big week in San Antonio with Startup Week going on for five straight days featuring keynotes, panel discussions, workshops, networking mixers, live podcasting and more! We were fortunate enough to be included in the festivities by hosting a live podcast recording of Cyber Talk Radio featuring our special guest, Cat Dizon! With a focus on startups, it was only fitting to have Cat on the show to tell us about all of the great work going on locally in the startup ecosystem, venture capital funding, and encouraging women-founded startup companies](https://www.startupssanantonio.com/alamo-angels-names-cat-dizon-as-its-new-executive-director/). Cat shares tips for startups and what they should be thinking about and doing to attract investors. What's the difference between angel investment and venture capital funding? There are specific requirements and criteria that investment groups like Alamo Angels and Active Capital follow to make sure your business is doing its due diligence to meet the requirements for the specific type of investment you are going after. For example, make sure your business’s security posture is up-to-date and maintained adequately. What does a good startup look like? Any rising stars in San Antonio? Cat shares a story about how she met the CEO/Founder of Funnel AI and what they are doing to provide an AI-powered social selling solution to dealerships and real estate companies.
For the second half of the show, we polled the live audience for questions and what they wanted to hear about. One of the questions was around healthcare and IT, ransomware in hospitals and how to keep private medical data safe. Protecting medical records and confidential facts have to have a whole different level of security. Even though there are security regulations and guidelines to follow, there are still data breaches and cyberattacks. What can you do to keep your confidential data safe? I share some tips and best practices to follow to try to keep your data protected. Next, we move into an important topic - female entrepreneurship. Recently in San Antonio, there has been a localized explosion of female entrepreneurs that have entered the startup scene and are building some innovative companies. Be sure to check out a few startups on Cat’s watch list - Robin Laine of Transect, Melissa Unsell-Smith of Rectify, and Katy Aucoin of Dearduck. How do we encourage and grow the number of female investors and founders within the startup scene? What’s next in 2019 for the San Antonio startup ecosystem? Listen to the full episode replay to learn more about how you can play a part in growing the startup ecosystem in San Antonio.!
