Cyber Talk Radio: San Antonio Tech and Startup Trends
Bret Piatt, CTR Host and Iris Gonzalez of Startups San Antonio - Episode 124 of Cyber Talk Radio
This past Saturday, February 9, episode 124 of Cyber Talk Radio hit the air on 1200 WOAI and iHeartRadio streaming. I was joined by Iris Gonzalez, founder of Startups San Antonio to discuss the latest tech trends and tease the release of her book featuring local innovative companies.
Since it’s the first anniversary of Startups San Antonio, we start out the episode reminiscing on the very beginnings of the website, which was created by Iris to celebrate the homegrown innovation in San Antonio. Iris talks about the conglomeration of national news that makes local readers hungry for community-based news, a need which she’s successfully fulfilled! The website looks at tech, cyber and bioscience innovation. She places a lot of emphasis on the “why” and “how” news will affect people, focusing on startups because they’re in the process of attempting to do something that’s never been done before, but don’t alway receive the attention they deserve for it. We discuss Iris’ prediction that 2019 is going to be a great year in the San Antonio startup ecosystem. Iris mentions a recent story about Port San Antonio, which is a great example of the larger forces that shape our local startup community. I asked Iris about her thoughts on the top technology trends presented at CES, and she believes that AI (artificial intelligence) is the next big thing. A related trend is robotics, which will function in the future as a way to streamline the workforce. Not to worry, because this type of narrow AI won’t understand context and creativity, and will spur the fourth industrial revolution: a unique collaboration of expertise and fields. San Antonio is unique ecosystem because of its many industries: military (both cybersecurity and medical), cybersecurity, robotics manufacturing and tech. Iris brings up that Port San Antonio is planning an “innovation hub” for education and industry partners. We discuss many other innovators who have been on Cyber Talk Radio, such as MERGE and Red Cell San Antonio, whose jobs are to collaborate with other industries.
After the break, we take a look at Iris’s website for the SA ecosystem map that compiles resources (that are constantly being updated) for entrepreneurship in the San Antonio community. It includes the other important startup-related resources, like Students + Startups and incubator programs. Iris also publishes a weekly business calendar, thanks to her partnerhsip with the folks at SABusinessCalendar.com. Startups go through many iterations and phases in order to become successful, and Iris’s Startups San Antonio 2019 Book includes many of those stories. We discuss the stories from the book of multiple medical professionals who use innovation and AI to become entrepreneurs for devices, software and technology that improve efficiency and healthcare quality. This book is meant to represent the many types of innovation in the city in 2019. For example, technology is now invading civic engagement positively, software-as-a-service (SaaS) is becoming more popular, and now AI is trying to change paper-based industries into digital ones. Look out for Startups San Antonio 2019 Book to preorder soon on the website. For Iris, what’s rewarding about creating this book is feeding the hunger to know what’s happening in the city. She has readers all over the country and the world that are excited to read stories about San Antonio. Resources and funding has been a challenge, but the knowledge that she’s making a difference is all Iris needs to keep going.
Iris is on the lookout for writers and editors willing to join Startups San Antonio and make a difference, she can be contacted here. Listen to the full episode replay to learn more about latest tech trends.
