Recovering from a Ransomware Attack
There has been an increasing number of ransomware attacks over the last several years, putting the data of individuals and businesses at a greater risk for loss. Paying the ransom to attackers is never recommended. This only continues to finance and encourage their operations and is not shown to be very effective in recovering data. In fact, it has been reported that half of the people that pay the ransom never get their data back.
Fortunately, most of the antivirus companies release tools that can be used to decrypt and remove ransomware from infected machines. Below I’ll list a few of the websites that offer free ransomware decryption tools and a brief description of what is available on each.
Ransomware decryption tools:
- Bitdefender offers four ransomware decryption tools (GandCrab, Lockcrypt, Annabelle and BTCWare) and a recognition tool which can be helpful to identify which variant of ransomware you may have.
- Avast has a larger selection of decryption tools to decrypt the following virus variants: AES_NI, Alcatraz Locker, Apocalypse, BadBlock, Bart, BTCWare, Crypt888, CryptoMix (Offline), CrySiS, EncrypTile, FindZip, GandCrab, Globe, HiddenTear, Jigsaw, LambdaLocker, Legion, NoobCrypt, Stampado, SZFLocker, TeslaCrypt and XData. They do not, however, have a recognition tool that will tell you if the variant is from a new update that the tool can’t decrypt.
- MCAfee released one tool that allows you to decrypt several different ransomware families and is updated when they discover new decryption keys and logic to decrypt your files.
There are many tools available to help you recover from a ransomware attack. Although they are not a guarantee, they can certainly serve as a starting point to recovery.
While all businesses can become potential targets, there are steps that you can take to reduce the risk of a successful attack and mitigate the fallout. Jungle Disk provides a cybersecurity suite designed for small businesses with two to 250 employees. With active network protection and secure data backup, our technology offerings can help you reduce the risk of data loss from ransomware attacks and help protect your assets.
