Cyber Talk Radio: InfoSec and Cyber Education in San Antonio
Bret Piatt, CTR Host and Steven Bernstein from BSides San Antonio - Episode 137 of Cyber Talk Radio
This past Saturday, May 11, episode 137 of Cyber Talk Radio hit the air on 1200 WOAI and iHeartRadio streaming. I was joined by Steven Bernstein, local IAM practioner and BSides San Antonio coordinator, to discuss the infosec community in San Antonio, cyber training and education for youth and other local organizations promoting tech and security.
To start off the episode, I ask Steven to talk me through how he found his way into the information security industry. He started as a filmmaker, where his mentors pushed him to get internships, and then he eventually got a position working in support. In terms of his passion for information security conferences, Steven got interested when he accidentally went to a BSides conference in Las Vegas, which is incredible considering that he now runs the show in San Antonio! Steven really emphasizes the importance of how getting rejections and failing ultimately lead to opportunities. For him, it made him push himself to challenge the status quo. I discuss how failure pushes me to look for unmet needs all over the industry, which is why I started Cyber Talk Radio — to raise awareness about the city’s opportunities and cybersecurity and tech programs. Similarly, BSides conferences all start with local meetups, and the needs and desires for conferences grow from there. Since San Antonio is the No. 2 city in the nation for cybersecurity, it’s a great place for making connections and talking with community members who have similar interests, which we talk about more after the break.
In the second half of the show, we make sure to note the important information for the upcoming BSides San Antonio conference! It will be on June 8 at St. Mary’s University — more information and tickets can be found on their website here. What the conference is really about is trying to appeal to people’s specific interests and passions. This year, the conference has workshops for both professional and technical development and teaches that doing stuff online is more about problem solving and thinking outside of the box. People from the Texas Cyber Summit will be around, as well as Infoguard, CoderDojo, and more! This event is all about finding YOUR own tribe and opening doors for opportunities. He’s recently been giving talks about connecting and networking with your passions. Get yourself out there and opportunities will present themselves! Steven found that the more he connected with people, the more they were willing to become his chosen family of mentors and friends. To hear more from Steven, he has his own podcast, Security Endeavors. Steven can also be found on Twitter @sciaticnerd.
