Cyber Talk Radio: Cybersecurity Center at St. Philip's College
Bret Piatt, CTR Host and St. Philip's College - Episode 139 of Cyber Talk Radio
This past Saturday, May 25, episode 139 of Cyber Talk Radio hit the air on 1200 WOAI and iHeartRadio streaming. I was joined by Edith Orozco and Caroline Mora, professors at St. Philip's Cybersecurity Center to learn more about their degree program, student organizations, scholarships, and certifications.
To kick off the conversation, Caroline and Edith share how they got into cybersecurity with operational experience in the business world and how they then progressed into teaching at St. Philip's College. How does the Alamo College District work? The system includes St. Philip's College (SPC), San Antonio College, North West Vista College, North East Lakeview and Palo Alto College. At SPC, the Cybersecurity Center has a prestigious recognition of being a NSA/DHS National Centers of Academic Excellence (NCAE) in Cyber Defense! Within the cybersecurity track, the classes include cyber forensics, network administration, intrusion detection, incident response, Linux, Windows and much more. What is cyber forensics? It’s all about information security, the goal is to give students hands-on experience with virtual machines to learn how to use different cybersecurity software and hardware tools. Cyber forensics is investigating a digital trail of breadcrumbs. Edith also gives us a peek into the Business Information Solutions courses at SPC. How is it different from cybersecurity? In today’s digital world, everyone needs cybersecurity awareness. SPC includes cybersecurity classes within their different degree programs even for business, accounting, automotive, and culinary students.
There are several different student organizations that Edith and Caroline help advise and mentor such as CyberPatriot, SPC Cyber Tigers, Cyber First Responders and youth camps hosted at the college. The Cyber Tigers are a group of students who are interested in all things technology. The Cyber Tigers compliment their studies of networking, Microsoft applications, Linux, and security to form a club that helps channel school work into real work scenarios and experiences. This summer SPC has a Cyber Camp in July for girls, if you want to get your kids involved, you can still apply at here!
As a NCAE designated program, St. Philip’s College recognizes that cybersecurity is important and key to our nation’s security. Given the importance, the college has concentrated on building up the Cybersecurity Center and also helping make it accessible to students through scholarship and financial support programs like Project Quest for students to get help with both tuition and books. For junior high and high school students in San Antonio, check out Cyber P-TECH at Sam Houston High School. Through St. Philip’s, Cyber P-TECH students will have the opportunity to earn an Associate of Applied Science in Information Technology Cybersecurity Specialist degree! How awesome is that? Listen to the full episode replay to learn more about St. Philip's College Cybersecurity Center.
