Students + Startups in the Jungle: Miah's Final Reflections
Having the opportunity to work at Jungle Disk within the Students + Startups program has been such a great experience. While looking through internships at Columbia University, I wasn’t expecting to spend the summer in Texas, but I’m happy it happened. Staying at Trinity University and working in the heart of downtown San Antonio, all the while exploring some of the great benefits of this city has made my freshman year summer very worthwhile.
Throughout the duration of this summer, I have been working on a market research project for the sales team about a new service they will be offering. John allowed me full control to take this project in any direction that I see fit and has been a great help along the way. This process has given me a taste of what it’s like to manage my own time, carry out a project with full creative control and present it to a group when it’s completed — giving me full responsibility.
On top of that, I was able to manage my own team of high schoolers as part of Jungle Disk’s high school internship program with the SAISD Foundation. Witnessing them grow as individuals - and a team - while delivering better projects each week made my summer so much better. Through all of this, six other Jungle Disk college interns have accompanied me, which truly made the summer so much more fun.
Thanks to the generosity of the 80/20 Foundation, Jungle Disk and Students + Startups, my summer was one to remember. From going to Six Flags and Top Golf to having a vanilla iced latte from Rosella everyday to walking along the San Antonio River Walk, my summer is filled with memories that I’ll always be thankful for. Looking back, I am so glad that I took a chance on a program that went national for the first time this year and I can’t wait to tell my younger friends about it.
