Students + Startups in the Jungle: Meet Miah
Coming from a small town in southeast Ohio of 6,000 people and a tight-knit family of four, I’ve always been excited to explore different parts of the world. From different programs in high school that lead to places such as Beijing, China, and Philadelphia to leaving home for college at Columbia University, I’ve always had an itch to see what’s out there. When I came across an opportunity to work at an amazing company like Jungle Disk in beautiful San Antonio, I could not pass it up.
I can’t introduce myself without touching on the largest aspect of my life; my family. My mom, dad, and sister have always supported and loved me for exactly who I am and I couldn’t be more grateful for this. Betty; my mom, has always pushed me to do my best and has acted as a Kris Jenner-style momager. Andy; my dad, has never declined to support - and finance - whatever I sought out to do. Last but not least, my sister, Peyton has acted as an inspiration and built-in best friend to me for my whole life. I would never be where I am today without them.
Before I dive into my professional and educational passions, I have always loved playing video games such as The Sims, Grand Theft Auto, and Simcity! For over ten years now, I’ve built and furnished homes within The Sims game and had myself convinced several times to go to graduate school for interior design (which I haven't completely written off still). Simulation games have always piqued my interest, especially ones where the player gets to manage a business or city of any type. Other than video games, I also love food and coffee. Working at a coffee shop in high school fueled my addiction to an all-time high and has propelled me to find the best iced latte and hot mocha in New York City - an expensive, but tasty endeavor.
Throughout my time in high school, I was involved in a number of different extracurriculars. I was involved in every club that I could be in, most of them focusing on bettering the school’s environment and accomplishing community service in my home town. Within my community, I worked as a concession stand employee, youth soccer referee, and barista at a local coffee shop. Outside of my school and community, I was (and still am) a camp counselor for the iBELIEVE Foundation, among other things. Being involved is a fundamental part of who I am, and it has continued into my college career. This past semester, I was placed on the University Life Events Council to plan and coordinate events for students and was accepted into the Columbia Organization for Rising Entrepreneurs. Currently, I am majoring in financial economics and I’m excited for what the next three years hold.
This summer, at Jungle Disk, I am excited to take on the role of the sales intern! In my first week, I became acclimated to the suite of products, found my place within the amazing Jungle Disk environment, and familiarized myself with other businesses in the cybersecurity space. Moving on, my project is to do market research on the competitive landscape of resellers of Microsoft Office 365 and Google G Suite as Jungle Disk prepares to place themselves within it. With my research, the team will be able to assemble a marketing plan and gather the resources needed for a successful launch of this service. Additionally, the other six college interns and I will be managers for the cohort of over two dozen Jungle Disk high school interns. Being able to manage a small team of interns and gain experience in this way is an opportunity only Jungle Disk could have given me, and I am so grateful. I am thrilled to be able to do this work this summer while enjoying my time with the other 2019 interns.
Reflecting on my first week here at Jungle Disk, I know it’s the right choice for me. It’s the perfect balance between corporate and startup culture which I love! San Antonio, Students + Startups, Geekdom, and Jungle Disk are providing a fantastic summer for me already and I am so thrilled to be here!
